17th January – 7pm – Berwick Parish Centre:

Dr David Barber will be speaking about Ursula Clark and her book ‘Historic Architecture of Northumberland’ published by Oriel Press in 1969. The talk will focus on Clark’s photographs of the north of the county and the area around Berwick.

David is the secretary of the Royal Photographic Society Historical Group and is extremely knowledgeable on the history of photography in the North East.

30th January – 7pm – Berwick Parish Centre:

Ariana Preston, a PHD student from Durham University, will be giving a talk entitled “A Woman’s Work – Daisy Edis and the Edis Studio, Durham.”

The talk will cover the Edis family of photographers and their studio and surviving collections, and how the studio came to be re-constructed at Beamish. The Edis family had been involved in photography from the very early days of the medium in London. Ariana will speak about Daisy Edis’ life and career, and about women’s impact on photography both in the region and in wider photographic history through the era she was working – from 1901 to 1964.

It’s an interesting story about how Daisy balanced being both a business woman and studio owner with her artistic practice and developed a creative identity for herself.
